Playing with things

I was thinking about the idea that how i can transfer the light throw the tinted glass or i better say my acrylic. I was trying to transfer the light through the width of the acrylic so in that way my light would be more effective and layered or beam like. I'm not quite sure if in real life we have a glass that looks like the width of the acrylic or not that's why I used the words "tinted glass". what I really want is a glass which is like the width of the the acrylic, so its not really see through but it transfer the light in the way that i wanted.
I grabbed a little acrylic and my small torch (point light) and I noticed the amount of light and the way they scatter depends on the angle that the light goes through it.

Drawings/Sketches

I started from the plan of the place. I went to Auckland City Council in Greys Avenue and got a 1:100 plan of my site. so I could draw on it.

The plan of the second apartment.

These are the initial drawings that Ive had done but there has been changes in them later on in order to keep the context of my design in the right path.

This was going to be located in the 4th floor of the parking lot.

Both floors (the 4th floor of the apartment and the roof)

The top floor of my design which is located on the roof of the parking lot.

Very first drawings, I was just trying to bring my thoughts together.
I was thinking part of my station could look like the deck of a ship and people could drink and have food there. I was thinking the other part of my station could be like a green roof, with trees and grass inside a  glass box with sensitive automatic doors.

this was going to be my buttom floor, internet caffe was going to be located here for people to use. its not a very good drawing but i was trying to show a small part of the wall thats its been layered with wood and tinted glass letting light coming in by doing some sort of projection behind it so it would make it feel like a real light.

I was feeling that the design is not right and I wasnt focusing on one idea and that wouldnt bee a uniform looking building therefor i started reconsidering about my design and trying to make it better and focus on one context which was sailing boat.

Trying to get inspired

We have been told that our design should be something that people enjoy and that it helps the city (so that we call it a gift). for my inspiration i started to take a look at different pictures. These were some of the pictures that I was looking at.
I was looking at how the contrast of light and darkness would be like becuase Te Ara Tahuhu walkway is not a very sunny place during the day.

after a while I started thinking about sailing and that how I could use it in my design. As we have been told we have to let the weather ocme into our design.

Week 8-10, Laser Cutting

This week we had to design a tram path way in our site in groups of 5. Our idea was to link the places that have the potential for social gathering. Then we each had to pick a site and design a station.
This is my site:
Duckside lane, near countdown

Peer Review

The first person who I talked to was Jack Tiong. He had made a 5 story building, 5 clients for each level. His idea was how light is important in photo taking and he wanted to use different amount of light in different floors. His inspiration was the reflection of the light in a prism. Jacks advice was to start quickly on the model.

The second person who I talked to was Pak Hea Choon. His idea was maze. The spaces in his model were for music, gym, piano, spa and spray rooms and rock climbing space. He didnt want to make it like normal 5 story buildings and instead he used different height of walls which was interesting for me. he used a 3D pattern on the outer part of the walls. Nice work.
His advice was to be accurate in measurements.

The third person who I talked to was Louis Ratana. His idea was the cycle way and flowing. His building contains levels for library, storage, observatory, guitar repairs, studio and food. There is an open edge atrium construction on each level. His idea was sustainability within the structure, free food and vegetables for humanity. His advice was to be reasonable and exciting, practical, and design beyond my capability!

The Matrix

The unlucky thing is I wasnt feeling very well after the crit and I dont remember anything where I left my matrix and precedent. unfortunately i didnt get a good mark for my matrix this time and the reasons where because it wasnt finished and it was hand drawn. I went back to studio during weekend but I couldnt find it so I guess I'm gonna draw it again but this time I wanna try and draw it using the computer so it'll look neater.

Making..

I was just trying to see how things would work so I started to make a 1:20 model out of paper and very thin perspex:

Trying to figure out the measurements and the angles:
Painting the 1:5 model's glasses (out of perspex) with glass transparent paint:

Interior, painted windows and wooden walls and floor, old looking.

Metallic look using an aluminum tape, modern looking.

Final model out of metal and real glass, painted.

Welded support

Solar film (one way mirror film) added to the glass in order to make the building look very modern from outside.

The idea was to show the contrast between an old and a new building. People in my group were trying to show how they were feeling about new buildings and how they were renovating the buildings to answer the need of the society by replacing parts with the new material like steel. The structure of my precedent building is out of metal so I decided to use metal as my material. To show the contrast I used metal for the outside and solar film (one-way mirror film) to make things look modern. I used wood for the inside to cover all the parts in metal and painted windows to give it a feeling of old looking building from inside, the warmth that we all feel by interring an old looking building, brown wooden parts, light playing around with the painted windows and etc.
For my model I wanted things to be neat, smooth and kinda shinny from outside so I used welding way but I guess I made a mistake and that wouldnt really work very well in real life. The I started thinking maybe I could do a more complex design by designing two layers of walls and windows, the first layer from inside would have bolts and all those construction things to make the building strong enough to hold 5 people in it with some dead loads. From the outside (second layer) there would be a less strong construction just for the view from outside, so very smooth metallic walls with smooth mirror like windows, everything perfect without anything disturbing the shape. In this way the building would be both strong and smooth and neat. for the inside layer I was thinking to choose thick wooden floor and use bolts holding to walls and the metal floor to it. and everything would be built on a bridge like shape that had fastened onto the two neighbor buildings, its firmly held to them. Its like people can walk under the building and look up. The bridge is made of hard material and then there is a layer of mirror like square sheets moving around it and twisting over it and in the end hit the walls at the sides and spread all over it and disappear gradually. The building is almost two stories, well there is the main floor and there is a little place (which is my office) on the top connected to the ground floor by stairs.
